Halloween Safety Tips for Seniors

santa-clarita-halloween-seniorsHalloween in Santa Clarita is a fun filled event.  Neighborhoods are decorated in fall splendor and children with candy and costumes line the streets – but did you know it could be a stressful time for Santa Clarita seniors? From frightening, masked visitors to the possibility of falling in the dark, many people don’t realize what a negative impact Halloween can have on seniors. Some of the dangers seniors might face during Halloween could be stress from greeting strangers, being alone on the scary holiday, or simply being afraid the dark.  Here are a few tips to make this seasonal celebration a little less scary, and a lot safer for your senior.

Turn On the Lights

Keep both indoor and outdoor lights on for the night.  Keep your home well lit, even if you are not handing out candy. If it is not well lit around your home you could become a target for vandals or others who pose a threat. However, lights are a great deterrent to crime and could ward off someone who intends to do harm.

Let Visitors Stay Outside

Consider handing out treats on the front porch rather than from inside your house.  Also, never –ever – let anyone into your home, even if the person has a small child. Remember, your loved one should never feel obligated to answer the door on Halloween if he or she feels unsafe.

Use Teamwork

This means do not leave your loved one home alone. If you cannot be there, ask a trusted friend or family member to stay with your senior. This way, your loved one has someone to help him or her hand out candy and deter unwanted guests.

Skip Driving For the Night

The streets are busy with children trick-or-treating, therefore, encourage your senior to avoid driving during this time. The task could be more difficult than usual.

Being aware of the dangers can enable you to help your senior have a safe and fun Halloween.
