Preventing Falls in the Elderly at Home

Slips and falls may not be a huge problem for young or middle aged people but for persons aged 65 or older they can cause tremendous physical and financial pain. Fall related accidents accounted for $30 billion in medical costs in 2010 and were also the leading cause of death and injury for this age group. Seniors have a variety of additional risk factors that makes falls more serious and failing to take preventative measures can lead to far worse situations.Senior on Stairs

Elderly persons are more vulnerable to falls for a variety of reasons including osteoporosis, a weakening of the bones, decreased muscle mass, poor balance, failing eyesight, and other physical disabilities.  Even medications can contribute to the risk because some can cause dizziness or even affect balance and the way a person walks. Many falls occur simply because a person feels they are capable of continuing to do certain jobs around the house like hanging lights or trimming a tall tree, but their abilities have changed as they have gotten older.

How can falls be prevented?

Preventing falls completely isn’t always possible but certain precautions can make your elderly loved one safer and more able to live independently. Often times an elderly person is reluctant to admit they need help or if they have a problem because they are unaware of it or they don’t want their independence taken away. Offering to help without being asked is one way to make this easier. Other preventatives include:

  • Stay Active: Exercise can help increase strength and balance making a fall less likely and recovery easier if one does occur.
  • Eat Well: Eating the right foods includes a reduction in processed items and possibly less salt and/or sugar. Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol is also beneficial.
  • Keep Doctor Appointments: Consult your doctor and see if there are alternatives for medications that cause dizziness. Eye exams and regular check-ups are also important.
  • Remove Household Hazards: Fix loose floorboards, ripped carpeting, and broken handles and railing. Remove electrical cords from the floor along with clutter and other low furniture that might not be easily seen by an older adult.
  • Add Safety Measures: Grab bars in the bathroom, additional lighting, and double railings along stairways can all help.
