The Latest Blood Pressure Guidelines Changing Meds for Many Seniors

If you have a senior loved one on blood pressure medication, you understand the importance of them taking it each day. In fact, it is so important you send them reminders, set out their medication and may even have an in home care provider to ensure they remember.

Everyone knows the dangers of high blood pressure and the importance of controlling it; however, the latest findings from the Eight Joint National Committee released a set of controversial guidelines stating that the relaxed blood pressure for individuals over the age of 60 was now considered normal at rates of 150/90. The new guidelines also eased the targets for blood pressure for seniors suffering from kidney disease or diabetes.

As a result of these newly established guidelines, the proportion of adults that are considered eligible for blood pressure medication will drop from approximately 41 percent, all the way down to 32 percent. The researchers involved in the study also stated that as many as 13.5 million adults, with the majority of these individuals being older than 60, would now be considered as having appropriately managed blood pressure. This includes as many as 5.8 million people that would no longer need blood pressure medication.

There are a number of experts that are concerned that increasing the blood pressure levels in these adults may actually be harmful. According to a number of medical professionals, every patient is different, and whole some will be okay with the higher blood pressure, others may be significantly harmed. For many, a doctor’s judgment will trump any established guidelines, as their ultimate goal is to ensure their patients’ health and safety.
