Why You shouldn’t Ignore Sudden Weight Loss in Seniors

sad old ladyAs a person ages, one of their biggest fears is losing their independence. As a result, they may fail to mention certain issues to their family members, afraid that it may result in their independence being taken away. This is why it is more important than ever before for adult children and other family members or caregivers to take care of any changes in a senior’s attitude, physical appearance or general behavior.

One issue that should not be ignored is significant weight loss. While some seniors may try to downplay this issue, a sudden, significant drop in weight can be an indication of a serious health issue.

The fact is that when this issue occurs, many people automatically think the big “C;” however, this is not always the case. There are quite a few issues that may be the cause of weight loss, including hypothyroidism, gastrointestinal issues, dementia and even depression. Up to 15 percent of seniors will suffer from quick-onset weight loss and recognizing the problem early on can help to prevent more serious issues.

When it comes to the issue of weight loss in seniors, there are a number of key factors that should be watched for, which include:

  • Depression: A sudden, significant loss of weight can be associated with social withdrawal, depression and even a loss of the will to live.
  • Loss of taste or smell: While a normal part of the aging process is losing some of a person’s sense of taste or smell, this issue can be made worse by a disease or certain medications, which may eventually lead to anorexia.
  • Constipation: This is often the signs of a diet that is not adequate in fluids and nutrients. While there are some store bought remedies for cases of constipation, the issue of poor nutrition has to be addressed.
  • Reduced or no appetite: Chewing issues, disease or a general disinterest is food is all reason for concern.

When sudden weight loss is recognized early on, there are a number treatments available. Even if the cause is cancer, early detection can result in a complete turnaround.

Taking the time to notice issues with the elderly is essential to help them remain healthy and happy. In addition to adult children taking notice, the senior’s caregiver should, as well.
